November 2009

In November nearly all of the newly elected Ambassadors and their teachers attended regional meetings in Swansea and Bodelwyddan. The meetings were a chance for Keith Towler to meet the ambassadors and to listen to their views and ideas on how they are going to do their jobs.

The ambassadors took part in special workshops all about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. They had fun creating life sized drawings filled in with colourful pictures and words about the rights all young people have under the UNCRC. It was a good way to make rights relevant to their lives and really helped them to understand what this rights stuff is all about!

The afternoon was all about the ambassadors ideas and talking about ‘special projects’ in schools, this is the work that the ambassadors hope to do to make a difference in their own schools. There was also a website demonstration all about how to share photos, messages and drawings by uploading them to the new ambassador’s area on the website.

Everyone left feeling happy and full of ideas, we look forward to hearing from all the ambassadors soon to find out what they have been working on in their own schools. Watch this space!

Our Ambassadors Scheme Grows Again!

In September 2009, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales’ Ambassadors scheme is growing again! This year there will be 54 schools from all over Wales involved in the scheme, and a total of 108 Ambassadors.

The first Regional Ambassadors meetings will be held in the autumn, once all the Ambassadors have been elected. The meetings will be a chance for the new Ambassadors to meet Keith Towler, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, find out about what he does, and to learn all about children’s rights.

After the meeting, the Ambassadors will have lots of ideas to take back to their schools, where they’ll be making sure that the other children know about the Children’s Commissioner for Wales and United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, and doing some work with the school council about children’s rights.

An even bigger network

Twenty four schools are taking part in the ambassadors scheme this year (at least one in each county in Wales); this means there will be 48 ambassadors in schools all over Wales. We are excited that the scheme is growing and that more and more schools know about the Children’s Commissioner for Wales and children’s rights.

Ambassadors’ Meetings

In January we had two meetings for Ambassadors, one in Swansea and one in Bala. At the meetings the ambassadors took part in activities to find out more about the Children’s Commissioner and children’s rights. There were also actvities to help the ambassadors come up with ideas for doing their jobs in their schools.

The meetings were a lot of fun and everyone said they enjoyed them.
